Will AI Control Us?

I admit that as a professional engineer and computer science user (now in retirement) I am greatly surprised by the society in general, and by Christian community in particular, not being alerted by a danger that the AI technology is posing to the future of our civilisation.

The AI technology is being rapidly developed now for enabling humanity to create a neuro-technology which will mimic processes of the human brain’s thought. According to scientists working in that domain (like the Polish Prof. Wiesław Nowiński and Prof. Włodzisław Duch), human brain contains about 100 milliard neurons and hundred thousand milliards of connections between the neurons. Those connections, called synoptic connections, are used for transmitting of information between neurons.

In a similar way to building of neuron net in the brain of a human being from the pre-natal stage to an adulthood, building of AI neuron net and connections in AI “brain” takes place by the processes of “machine learning” and “machine deep learning” conducted by human beings. Those processes are incomparably faster and are subject to human ethical   moral imper-fections. Those imperfections, when considered in spiritual domain, are called human sins.

I have been watching, the other day, the internet program provided by the Polish protestant Christian TV station called Idź Pod Prąd (Eng. go against the current) in which there have been provided results of a poll conducted on the viewers of that program.

The answers to the question: Are we going to be controlled by AI? were as follows :

Yes, very soon 81%,

 No, will help us 9%,

 Other         10%.

Thus, 81% of the viewers thought that Artificial Intelligence will soon control them. However, we are looking at the country where Evangelical Christians are about 1% of the population (country predominantly Roman Catholic). There are in existence companies, which are already engaged in development of neuro-technology (like Open AI, Google) and AI systems (like ChatGPT), which are used for good applications (medical) and not so good (military, political).

Already mentioned previously Prof. Nowiński, who has worked in the Polish Academy of Sciences, in Singapore, in Switzerland, in John Hopkins Hospital in the United States, has developed 35 brain atlases including his one, which are being used for medical applications in 90 countries.

Similarly, to developments in many technological advances, Artificial Intelligence development will be (and is already) utilized for some good applications and for some evil ones. It is (and will be) utilized for good by the righteous people and for evil purposes by the evil people. Therefore, it is necessary to build into the developed neuron net and the connection algorithms some checking measures preventing the evil applications.

The author of this essay attaches a link to the Podcast called didaskalia#24 in which there is an interview with Prof. Duch (however in Polish).

Will AI Control Us?

What should Christians know about AI? Does the good outweigh the dangers? These are some of the questions we need to answer.
